Cork Tithe Defaulters for 1831 - Wallstown Parish
Affidavit: Wallstown
Parish
The memorialist having compounded with his Parishioners (except the few marked
thus *) in Autumn last for their tithes of 1831 for which they with very few
exceptions passed. prommissary notes for the sums set forth in Column 3 of
Schdule annexed and which they promised to pay in two installments one on the
l5th November next ensuing and the other on the 15th of March following and in
consideration of their so doing Memorialist promised to such as would pay
punctually on or before the above named days that he would reduce one shilling
in the pound in addition to the large reduction he had made to them already from
the value of their Tithes as returned by hi viwers — Since which time and prior
to the general combination against Tithes some paid part leaving a balance due
as set forth in Column 5 and others have settled with Memorialist as set forth
in Schedule. But since the Combination has commenced they have ceased to pay and
have openly declared they will not pay any more Tithes having been told by their
Priest that they should not do so. And Memorialist further Saith that he and his
family consisting of nine daughters having been constantly insulted by persons
passing by his Glebe to and from the meetings which have been held at the
adjoining Towns of Doneraile, Castletownroche etc and from what he has heard and
verily believes to be the determination of his Parishioners should he take any
steps to enforce payment Memorialist has not deemed it prudent or safe feeling
assured it would have no other effect than exciting the people to acts of
outrage against him and his unprotected family living in the most disaffected
part of the country & adjoining the villages where all the disturbances of 1822
and those subsequently connected with the Doneraile Conspiracy the attack on Mr
Law and neighbouring Magistrates and the burning of Memorialist‘s Carn Glebe
house, and, property to a large amount in the year 1828 were planned and
executed. Memorialist therefore begs Your Excellency will take his case into
,your humane consideration; that he may be relieved from the distress in which
he is involved by the conspiracy against him and the established Church.
